Anxiety and panic disorders are prevalent mental health ailments that affect millions of individuals globally, drastically impacting their daily lives, hindering them from performing even the simplest tasks. Even though "anxiety attack" and "panic attack" are used interchangeably, they are not synonymous. This article intends to provide an in-depth understanding of the disparity between anxiety and panic attacks and their symptoms.
Symptoms of Anxiety Attack
Anxiety attacks, commonly known as panic attacks, are brief episodes of intense fear or apprehension, which typically last a few minutes. Symptoms include a rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, sweating, shaking, choking or chest pain, stomach cramps, lightheadedness, and numbness in the hands or feet. If you experience these symptoms simultaneously, suddenly and unexpectedly, then you may be having an anxiety attack. Although anxiety attacks can be uncomfortable and frightening, they are not dangerous and will subside.
Symptoms of Panic Attack
Panic attacks are similar to anxiety attacks, but they are usually more intense and abrupt. Symptoms include sweating or chills, a rapid or pounding heart, trembling or shaking, shortness of breath, chest pain or discomfort, stomach upset, lightheadedness, and numbness or tingling sensations in the body. If you experience these symptoms together, suddenly and unexpectedly, then you may be experiencing a panic attack.
The Anxiety Cycle
Individuals who suffer from anxiety disorders may find themselves trapped in a vicious cycle of anxious thoughts and feelings. This cycle is tough to break, but with the help of an anxiety counselor, it can be overcome. Symptoms of anxiety include constant worrying, difficulty sleeping, headaches, muscle tension, and stomach upset, and avoidance of anxiety-inducing situations. If you recognize these symptoms in yourself, it is recommended that you seek assistance from a mental health professional.
How To Manage Anxiety
Managing anxiety and panic attacks involves practicing deep breathing or meditation, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, limiting caffeine and alcohol intake, and speaking to an anxiety specialist or counselor. By following these steps, you can learn to manage your anxiety and panic attacks, allowing you to enjoy a full and fulfilling life.
Anxiety Attack or Panic Attack?
Although the symptoms of anxiety and panic attacks can overlap, panic attacks tend to manifest abruptly and with no warning, while anxiety attacks can intensify over time. Panic attacks are more severe and can lead to a feeling of imminent doom or a fear of losing control. Anxiety attacks, on the other hand, are less intense but can last longer.
